Struggle started from childhood
Manorama’s life was full of difficulties since childhood. Due to poverty, his family wandered from one place to another and the family’s responsibility came at a very young age. He had to leave his studies at the age of 11 and work in others’ homes to run the house. Meanwhile, he got a chance to work in a drama troupe, and this is where his journey of acting started.
Marriage broken in two years, did not settle home again
At the beginning of her career, Manorama was given her manager S. M. Ramanathan fell in love with Ramanathan and both got married in 1954. He also had a son, named Bhupathi. But this happiness did not last long. Just two years after marriage, he divorced in 1956.[1] It is said that her husband left her on the advice of an astrologer.[2]
This deception had a profound effect on Manorama, but he did not lose courage. She decided that she would not marry again and will raise her entire life to raise her son and dedicate her work.[2] He said in an interview, “I was crying inside in front of the camera. I forgot all my sorrows for my son.”[3]
1500 movies and Guinness World Record
After separating from her husband, Manorama completely acted in acting. He never looked back after starting his film career with the Tamil film ‘Malayitta Mangai’ in 1958. He worked in Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi films besides Tamil. He set a Guinness World Record to act in more than 1000 films, and by the end of his career the figure had crossed 1500 films.
Social service and honor like Goddess
Manorama not only played a memorable character of the mother on the screen, but in real life she was ‘Achi’ for many people. He put a large part of his earnings in social service and help to the needy. She always helped young talents move forward. Due to his nature, struggle and vast heart, his family and community used to give him respect like ‘Kul Divam’ i.e. Kuldevi. She proved from her life that a woman alone can face every difficulty and touch new heights of success.
