Regarding the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the spokesperson of United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has expressed hope that the political and civil rights of the people of India and any other country where elections are being held will be protected. The United Nations has commented on the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and freezing of the accounts of the Congress Party.
“We hope that everyone will be able to vote in a free and fair environment in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in India,” said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN High Representative Antonio Guterres. The political and civil rights of the people of India and the countries where elections are being held will be protected. Furthermore, everyone should be able to vote in a free and fair environment.
Earlier, spokespersons of Germany and America have also given statements regarding the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal and freezing of Congress's bank accounts. At this time, the Indian Foreign Ministry had expressed strong opposition to the statements of both the countries and sent oil to the ambassadors of both the countries. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, America should not interfere in our election and legislative processes. The legislative process in India is governed only by the rule of law. Earlier, the Foreign Ministry had also said that the comments of the US State Department spokesperson on India's internal affairs are objectionable and unacceptable. Any country including America should refrain from making statements regarding India's internal affairs. India called the US Mission's Deputy Ambassador Gloria Barbena to its office in South Block and detained her for 30 minutes.
