Before the Lok Sabha elections, trouble has arisen for the main opposition party Congress. The Income Tax Department has issued a demand notice of Rs 1,823.08 crore to the Congress party for discrepancies in its tax returns for previous years. This has dealt a big blow to Congress, which was already struggling with the economic crisis. The notice was sent to him a day after the Delhi High Court dismissed his petition challenging the tax notice. According to sources, the new notice is for assessment year 2017-18 to 2020-21, which also includes penalty and interest. After this notice, Congress has once again accused BJP of resorting to 'tax terrorism' to destroy Congress financially before the Lok Sabha elections. The Congress is already in a cash crunch after the Income Tax authority imposed a fine of Rs 210 crore and froze the party's bank accounts in February this year, further adding to its troubles. The Congress had earlier accused the BJP of financially weakening the Congress and using the Income Tax Department against it ahead of the Lok Sabha elections starting on April 19. The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) also asked Congress to pay the tax dues and froze its bank accounts. Congress described the tribunal's order as an attack on democracy.
Action will be taken against ED, CBI if government changes at the Centre: Rahul Gandhi
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday accused the CBI and ED of working at the behest of the BJP government at the Center and warned that action will be taken against these agencies whenever the government changes at the Centre. If these agencies had done their work properly then there would have been no problem. They should think that one day when the government changes at the Centre, action will be taken against them and I guarantee that the action will be so strict that no agency will dare to do this again.
