Water Retention: The human body is made up of approximately 60 percent water. It helps protect our organs, joints and tissues. It also helps in digestion, absorption and delivery of nutrients to all parts. However, when excessive amounts of water accumulates, the condition is called water retention or fluid retention.

What causes water retention in the body? The water level increases due to edema, premenstrual syndrome, obesity, hormonal changes, pregnancy, menopause. Apart from this, there are some food items which increase the water level in the body excessively. This is due to the inflammatory properties they contain, which reduce the body's natural ability to regulate fluid levels.

Processed food – According to the NCBI report, eating processed food that has high sodium content or has added sugar causes water retention in the body. This includes foods like chips, hot dogs, cookies, cakes, ice cream, frozen meals.

alcohol abuse – Alcohol increases urine production. In such a situation, its excessive consumption increases the water level in the body, due to which there is a risk of liver damage. If you do not drink water while drinking alcohol, your body starts dehydrating and your body gets filled with water.

Salty or high salt foods – According to a report published in NIH, eating foods high in salt causes water retention in the body. This is why it happens. Because, excess salt disturbs the water-sodium balance in the body. This includes canned foods, pickles etc.

Foods high in sugar – Like salt, eating too much sugar also increases water levels. In such a situation, if you consume things like fruit juice, sports drinks, coffee and tea mixed with sugar, then water can also get accumulated in your body.

Refined carbohydrates – Eating foods containing refined carbohydrates like pasta, white rice, bread, cereals increases the risk of water retention in the body.
