IMD Alert: After Holi, a sudden big change is being seen in the weather. While heat has made its debut in different parts of the country, heat wave-like conditions are prevailing at many places in the southern state of Kerala. The meteorological department has also issued an alert for the next five days. The temperature in Thrissur, Kerala has already reached almost 40 degrees Celsius.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday (26 March) issued a warning for the next five days i.e. till 30 March, saying that the mercury will reach 40 degrees Celsius in Thrissur and 39 degrees Celsius in Kollam-Palakkad. At present, the maximum temperature recorded in Thrissur on Monday and Tuesday was 39.9 degrees Celsius and 39.8 degrees Celsius respectively, which is about four and a half degrees Celsius more than the average temperature.

What is the criteria for declaring heat wave?

According to the report of The Hindu, to declare a heat wave, the temperature of an area at that time should be 4.5 degrees Celsius more than normal. The maximum temperature of the coastal area should be greater than or equal to 37 degrees Celsius. If all these parameters are considered, the weather conditions are technically met to declare a heat wave in Thrissur. However, the India Meteorological Department has not made its official announcement.

Will the heat break records in these areas?

IMD sources say that to know the average normal temperature of an area, data of at least 30 years is required. IMD sources say that with no major summer rainfall forecast for the next seven days, maximum temperatures are likely to remain high in the coming days. According to IMD's record book, Vellanikakara of Thrissur, Punalur of Kollam and Palakkad will be the hottest areas in the month of March.
