UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed a Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction. For this, it has chosen Kamal Kishore, a top official of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) of India.

Kamal Kishore, 55, has been appointed Assistant Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction and Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, said on Wednesday.

Let us tell you that Kamal Kishore will replace Japan's Mami Mizutori. He currently holds the post of Secretary in the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). During India's Chairmanship of the G-20, Kamal Kishore chaired the G-20 Working Group on Disaster Risk Reduction. He also contributed to the development of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Climate Action Summit in 2019.
Dujarric further said, 'Kamal Kishore has worked with the government, United Nations and civil society organizations. He has nearly three decades of experience working in disaster risk reduction, climate action and sustainable development at the global, regional, national and local levels.'
Worked with UNDP for 13 years
The UN has said, 'Before joining NDMA, Kishor worked with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) for almost 13 years in Geneva, New Delhi and New York. During this time, he has advocated globally for reducing disaster-related concerns in the Sustainable Development Goals. In addition, Kishore has also led a global team of disaster risk reduction advisors to support UNDP-programmed countries. As Program Advisor, she also led the development of disaster and climate risk management-related components of the UNDP Strategic Plan (2014–17).
