When it comes to the increase in sea water level and subsidence of the land, cities such as Jakarta are often mentioned, which is completely on the verge of getting into the water. But perhaps you will be shocked to know that the three largest and important cities in India – Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai – are facing similar terrible threats. This is not just an environment warning, but a scary truth that we have to pay immediate attention.

There are two major reasons behind the sinking of these Indian metros: first, rising sea water level due to global warming and second, land collapse. The main reason for rising sea water level is the melting of Arctic and Antarctic glaciers and increasing its volume (volume) due to rising sea water temperature.

At the same time, the land subsidence of the land is a different concern. In these cities, excessive exploitation of groundwater for urbanization, construction works and drinking water is weakening the land, causing the land to sit down slowly. Mumbai’s foundation is marshy and its growing urban spread is making this problem more serious. Kolkata, which is situated at the mouth of the Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta, is extremely sensitive due to its natural geological structure. Increasing urbanization and excessive dependence on groundwater in Chennai is also intensifying this problem.

Scientists and various studies have constantly highlighted this danger. If it is not taken care of, millions of people can be homeless, the infrastructure can be destroyed and the economy may have a terrible effect. Whether this “sinking story” of these cities scared us or not, it now depends on our awareness and our responsibility towards the future. Realizing this danger, we have to take serious steps on water management, urban plan and environmental protection, so that the future of these cities and their millions of residents can be saved.
