A man living in America found it difficult to call his wife second hand. Dismissing a divorce plea, the Bombay High Court said domestic violence affects the self-esteem of a woman who was called 'second hand' and beaten by her husband on their honeymoon. Along with this, the High Court has upheld the order of the lower court in which it has been directed to pay a compensation of Rs 3 crore to the estranged wife.

It is known that the husband and wife are American citizens and they were married on January 3, 1994 in Mumbai. The second marriage also took place in America. But around 2005-06, he came to Mumbai and started living in a house. The wife also worked in Mumbai and then went to her mother's house. Around 2014-15, the husband went back to America and in 2017 he filed a divorce case in the court there and summons were issued to the wife. That year the wife filed a petition under the Domestic Violence Act in the Magistrate Court in Mumbai. In 2018, an American court divorced the couple.

The wife's case was that during their honeymoon in Nepal, the husband harassed her by calling her second hand because her previous engagement had been broken. After this the wife alleged that she was physically and emotionally abused in America. The husband defamed her character and accused her of having illicit relations with other men. The husband reportedly did not let her sleep at night until she confessed to the extramarital affair.

1999 attack on wife
In November 1999, the husband allegedly beat her so brutally that neighbors heard the noise and called the local police and he was arrested on charges of domestic violence. The wife said that she did not complain to the police but the police saw the injury marks on her face and took the matter seriously and after her brother's petition, she was granted bail.

The woman also alleged that her husband tried to kill her by suffocating her with a pillow in 2008, following which she left his house. She also alleged that the husband married another woman during the marriage. The husband opposed these arguments. But the court rejected the husband's arguments. On the other hand, the wife's mother, brother and uncle testified in court in her support. In 2023, the magistrate passed an order stating that the woman was a victim of domestic violence, after the trial court refused to allow the wife to use the couple's jointly owned flat in Mumbai, and ordered the husband to stay at her residence. Ordered to make alternative arrangements for or hire. House and salary was Rs 75,000 per month

In 2017 the court
The husband was ordered to pay Rs 15,000 every month as maintenance to his wife and a compensation of Rs 3 crore within two months. The husband also had to pay expenses of Rs 50 thousand. After this the husband challenged the order of the lower court in the Sessions Court. Which was rejected. After this he approached the High Court but the High Court upheld the compensation of Rs 3 crore. The court said that the act of domestic violence affects the self-esteem of the wife.
