News India Live, Digital Desk: Delhi Infrastructure: In the coming days, an important milestone will be achieved in an attempt to reduce congestion on one of the capital’s busiest commuter corridors. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is preparing to start traffic tests for a newly constructed tunnel system connecting Dwarka Expressway to Delhi-Jaipur Expressway.

Vehicles in upcoming testsLimited access to tunnels will be allowed for not a few hours. The purpose of these tests is to assess traffic flows and help the authorities fix operating aspects before the inauguration on full scale. Of Hindustan Times Report According to, the test phase is expected to end by the end of May, and is likely to begin fully public access by mid -July.

Structurally prepared, the last section expected to be operational within 10 days

The primary tunnel structure has already been prepared, while finishing is going on on the link connecting it directly to IGI Airport. This last section is expected to be ready in the next 10 days, after which tests will start in all directions, covering the airport from Gurugram to Dwarka Expressway, Dwarka Expressway and the routes coming back.

Major contact between Dwarka, IGI and Gurugram

The total 5.1 km long tunnel system is aimed at providing uninterrupted contact from Dwarka to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport and further Gurugram. The infrastructure includes a 3.6 km-long eight-lane tunnel and a 1.5 km long two-lane tunnel, which will allow traffic directly to the Delhi-Jaipur highway from the Dwarka Expressway.

This new route will bring great relief for thousands of daily travelers, who currently face severe traffic jams in Mahipalpur. With the formation of the tunnel, along with removing this perennial barrier, travel time between Dwarka and Gurugram is expected to be significantly shorter, especially on the route leading to Sirhaul toll plaza.

Part of large vision: Dwarka Expressway

The tunnel system is a major component of the Dwarka Expressway project, a 29 km long corridor designed to strengthen the contact between Delhi and Gurugram. This expressway, supported by single-pillar structure, extends 18.9 km in Haryana and 10.1 km in Delhi. With a total project cost of about Rs 9,000 crore, it is one of the most ambitious highway undertakings in India.
