Mumbai: Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court has accepted the petition challenging the Akola West Assembly by-election, the court has canceled the by-election. While hearing this on Tuesday, the election of Akola (West) has been declared cancelled.
Petitioner Anil Dubey challenged the Akola West by-election in the High Court. The petitioner claimed that there is a provision in the law that if there is less than a year left for the main election, then by-elections cannot be held. There are five-six months left for the assembly elections, so what is the need to hold by-elections? This by-election is being done to harass the voters and put pressure on the machinery.
Despite more than a year, Chandrapur, Pune Lok Sabha by-election was not held. But the petitioner alleged that people's money was being wasted in the Akola elections. The court upheld the petitioner's contention and ordered the cancellation of the Akola West by-election notification.
Along with the Lok Sabha elections, the Central Election Commission had also announced by-elections for the legislative assemblies of many states. Akola by-election is also included in this. Voting was to take place on 26 April. Therefore, various political parties had started preparing for the elections, but on Tuesday the High Court has ordered to cancel the elections.
