Congress has demanded withdrawal of the candidature of former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay. BJP has given him ticket from Tamluk seat of West Bengal. He commented on Mahatma Gandhi in an interview given to a channel. Since then they are being vaccinated. The former judge made controversial remarks on Gandhi-Godse, due to which Congress has now become angry.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh wrote on social media site X that with the grace of the Prime Minister, a judge of Calcutta High Court has resigned to contest the Lok Sabha elections. It is worse than pathetic that he has now said that he cannot choose between Gandhi and Godse. This is absolutely not acceptable. Those who left no stone unturned to take over the Mahatma's legacy should withdraw their candidature.
What did Abhijeet Gangopadhyay say?
Being a legal professional, I must try to understand the other side of the story. I must read his writings and understand what motivated him to assassinate Gandhi. Till then I cannot choose between Gandhi and Godse.
He further said that Godse had written a book which is also available in Bengali. But I think it is banned and not available anymore. I must read that book to understand what motivated Godsen to assassinate Gandhi. Gandhi was assassinated and Godse was the murderer. It is not possible to choose between the two. It is useless to compare them. When I was asked to choose between the two, I was forced to think from the judge's perspective, why did Godse kill Gandhi? What was his reasoning? Killing someone is undoubtedly wrong but I have heard that Godse had given 75 to 80 reasons for his act.
On 30 January 1948, Nathuram Godse assassinated Mahatma Gandhi. He shot Mahatma Gandhi three times during a prayer meeting at Birla House in New Delhi.
Gangopadhyay will contest from Tamluk seat
Gangopadhyay has recently resigned and joined BJP. He will face Trinamool Congress leader Debangshu Bhattacharya on Tamluk seat.
Lok Sabha elections are to be held across the country from 19 April to 1 June. Counting of votes will take place on June 4. Elections will be held in all seven phases in West Bengal. Elections on Tamluk seat will be held in the sixth phase on May 25.
