Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on a visit to Bhutan on 22 and 23 March. Bhutan has honored him with its highest civilian honour. But this visit of PM Modi means much more than this honour. During his third visit to Bhutan in a decade, Prime Minister Modi became the first foreign leader to be awarded the Order of the Druk Gyalpo, Bhutan's highest civilian honour, in recognition of efforts to strengthen bilateral relations.
On receiving the award from King Wangchuk, Prime Minister Modi underlined that it is an honor bestowed upon the people of India and a testament to the excellent state of bilateral relations between the two countries. PM Modi also announced Rs 10,000 crore assistance to the Himalayan nation over the next five years and said India stands firmly with Bhutan in its efforts to achieve self-reliance and become a high-income country. In another special gesture to Prime Minister Modi, both King Wangchak and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay met the leader at the airport after the official visit ended. Touched by the gesture, Prime Minister Modi said he was “honoured” and thanked the wonderful people of Bhutan for their warmth and hospitality, and said India will always be a trusted friend and partner of Bhutan.
