The terrorists kidnapped the aircraft for a week. The then Atal Bihari Vajpayee government decided to release the three terrorists to save the lives of passengers. These include Maulana Masood Azhar, Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar and Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh.

These terrorists were taken to Kandahar by a special aircraft. This Masood Azhar formed the terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed in 2000.
