The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) had said a few days ago that El Nino has reached its peak in the year 2023-24. This will continue to impact global climate in the coming months. The UN agency also said that temperatures are expected to be above normal across almost all land areas between March and May.

According to a report in The Hindu, the ongoing El Nino has caused record temperatures and extreme events across the world, making 2023 the hottest year on record. According to the European Union's Copernicus climate change service, the global average temperature in January exceeded 1.5 degrees Celsius for the first time for the entire year.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in its latest update has said that there is about a 60% chance of El Nino continuing during March-May. Due to which the year 2024 can become the hottest year. It said that La Nina is likely to develop by the end of the year but its probability is uncertain at the moment.

Scientists, who are closely monitoring La Nina in India, have said that formation of La Nina conditions till June-August could mean that monsoon rains this year will be better than 2023.
