In 2012, when PM Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, he had suggested in a program that now in the age of technology, if jail inmates prepare books in brain script, then books should also be prepared. In audio form. Due to this suggestion, this project was created in Sabarmati Jail and today an audio library of 4500 books has been prepared. Thousands of disabled people are getting benefit from this.
This project will also be extended to jails in other cities of the state.
IPS officer Dr KL Rao said the audio book recordings were made by prisoners in the barracks where Mahatma Gandhi was kept during the freedom struggle.
Here 20 male and 10 female prisoners have transcribed books related to religion, literature, history, technology etc. in Gujarati, Hindi, Sanskrit and English languages into audio form. For this he is paid Rs 100 per hour.
Work on this Awaaz project was started in collaboration with Andhajan Mandal of Ahmedabad and every year more than 300 books are being prepared in this way. Along with this, this project will also be started in the central jails of Rajkot, Surat and Vadodara in the near future.
