Mumbai / Nitin Patil: Along with maintaining law and order in the state, the work burden is constantly increasing on the police force, which is responsible for protecting the lives and property of the people. Keeping in view the total population and available police force of the state, only 172 police officers are available to protect the population of one lakh, indicating increasing pressure on the police.

Maharashtra has a population of 128.3 million. According to the information received under the Right to Information Act for the protection of such a large population, the number of real police forces in the state is 1,98,870 based on 2024 data. The number of women police officers is 36,009 and the ratio of women police officers is only 18.11 percent as compared to the total available police force.

51 thousand policemen posted in Mumbai

51,309 officers and employees are working to protect the people of Mumbai metropolitan region. The ratio of police force in Mumbai is only 270 per lakh population. Keeping in mind the total population and deployed police force of the country, there are only 153 police officers per one lakh population in the country. According to United Nations standards, this ratio should be at least 222 per 100,000 population.

It is expected that these posts will be filled without delay.

Given the increasing population, it is expected that the number of police officers will increase in proportion to the population and those posts will be filled without delay. Even more important is that the vacant posts should be filled without delay. It is being said that this will help in reducing the increasing charge on the police.

Lack of manpower; Impact on police efficiency

The responsibility of the police has been mentioned in the program budget of the Home Department. In which along with maintaining law and order, the police have to do many important tasks, such as protecting private and public property, keeping the traffic system correcting, investigating explosives, and checking the previous character. Apart from this, the police also have to do various tasks for the implementation of social and economic affairs. Due to lack of manpower due to so much workload on the police, the efficiency of the police is being affected.
