New Delhi: India is committed to protecting freedom of navigation and combating piracy and terrorism in the Indian Ocean region. After a heart-wrenching 40-hour battle in the Arabian Sea, India freed the merchant ship Ruchen from the clutches of Somali pirates and also freed seventeen crew members aboard. There were also 7 Bulgarians among those crew members. So Bulgaria's President Rumi Radev thanked India. In response to which Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Mr. President, I am grateful to receive your message. What could be happier than that seven Bulgarian citizens were able to safely reach their place of residence?

Earlier, Bulgaria's Foreign Minister Maria Tobrial met India's Foreign Minister S. When Subramaniam Jaishankar thanked India for that action in a message sent to Jaishankar through X-Post, he replied, “Friends are for this.” Earlier, MV had written on Gabriel X post. I am grateful for the rescue of Rouen and all 17 crew members on board, including 7 Bulgarians, from Somali pirates.

It is well known that near Akona Island in the Gulf of Aden, M.V. Rouen was captured by Somali pirates but Brigadier Calcutta of the Indian Navy and his sailors, with the help of the Air Force, freed the steamer from the pirates and freed all the crew members aboard. At the end of the 40-hour operation, thirty-five Somali pirates surrendered.
