The Indian team suffered a humiliating 3-1 defeat during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Before this defeat, the Indian team had faced a 3-0 defeat against New Zealand at home. In such a situation, it was natural to raise questions from Team India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma. In this context, a review meeting was organized on January 11 in a five-star hotel in Mumbai.

During this meeting, questions were also raised regarding captaincy, on which Rohit Sharma clarified that he will remain the captain for the next two-three months, while the board needs to explore future options. It is clear that Rohit Sharma will captain in the ICC Champions Trophy to be held in 2025, but after that his captaincy will depend on how the team performs.

When Jay Shah was the BCCI secretary, he had said that if India reached the Champions Trophy and World Test Championship (WTC) finals, Rohit would be the captain. However, after being eliminated from the WTC final, Rohit has another chance to prove his captaincy. However, his Test captaincy position is in danger.

Making Jasprit Bumrah the Test captain was also discussed in the review meeting. Most officials considered Bumrah suitable for captaincy, but questions were raised about his fitness. Bumrah played all five matches of the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy, but suffered an injury in the final match, due to which he was barred from bowling in the second innings. According to reports, Bumrah may also miss the Champions Trophy league matches.
