Mumbai – The work of repairing and reopening the grand monument named Gateway of India, which is the unique identity of Mumbai and which tourists from India and abroad do not forget to see when they come to Mumbai, is in progress. The repairs are likely to be completed next month.
Today one BHK is built in a luxurious area like Colaba in South Mumbai. Even if you want to take the same amount of space, you will have to spend two to three crore rupees. Then in 1924, when the grand building of Gateway of India was completed, its total cost was about 21 lakhs. Today Rs 7 crore is going to be spent on its repair.
When King George V and Queen Mary visited India in 1911, the Paratant Bhalat landed at the Apollo port in Mumbai. To commemorate his welcome, the grand building of Gateway of India was constructed. However, King George V had to be content with seeing the model of this monument. Because the actual construction of the monument began in 1915 and was completed in 1924. A grand entrance was built based on a design by top British architect George Wittet. Apart from the Indo-Saracenic style, the Gateway of India was inspired by Gujarati architecture.
This building, which had been standing for the last 100 years, was damaged due to the salty air of the sea. Due to heavy rains in Mumbai, water started seeping inside the strong stone building. Stones also broke at many places. There were cracks at many places.
The repair and plaster work of the Gateway of India monument, which falls under the category of Grade-1 heritage building, was started by the Maharashtra Directorate of Archeology and Museums from April 2023. Till now 30 percent renovation work has been completed. It is learned that this restoration project will be completed by the end of February.
The special thing about this ceremony to welcome the British Emperor is that when the country got independence in 1947, the last batch of British soldiers left for England by ship through this Gateway of India.
