Bangladeshi cattle smugglers attacked Border Security Force (BSF) soldiers on Thursday night on the India-Bangladesh border in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. The BSF said in an official statement that the troops, acting in self-defence, foiled the smuggling attempt and seized 10 bulls.

BSF personnel posted at Khutadah Border Out Post (BOP) noticed that the smugglers crossed the International Border from Bangladesh side and reached near the Indian border fence. The soldiers warned them to stop, but the smugglers ignored it.
- The smugglers moved aggressively and tried to cut the border fence using sharp spears.
- In response, a soldier fired a blank shot as a warning.
- Taking advantage of the darkness and rough terrain, the smugglers managed to return to Bangladesh.

During search of the area after the incident, BSF troops:
- 10 bulls of Haryana origin.
- Three sharp spears left by smugglers.
Concerns related to past events
According to the statement issued by BSF South Bengal Frontier:
- Similar incidents have already happened at Pipli BOP of Kolkata sector and HC Pur and Nawada posts of Malda sector.
- Regular meetings are held with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) regarding these attacks and smuggling attempts.
- However, Bangladeshi authorities have not yet taken any concrete action to stop such incidents.
BSF’s response
BSF said the soldiers made every possible effort to thwart smuggling and ensure the security of their area. The statement stressed that strict surveillance will continue to prevent smuggling and attacks on the international border.
