Special students will get third attempt in JEE Advanced 2025

The Supreme Court has given a relief verdict for the students who left their engineering courses to prepare for JEE Advanced between November 5 and November 18, 2024. The court has directed the Joint Admission Board (JAB) to allow such students a third attempt in JEE Advanced 2025.

However, the top court refused to interfere with JAB’s decision to reduce the number of attempts from three to two in general.

• 5 November 2024:
  JAB issued notice increasing the number of attempts in JEE Advanced from two to three.
  • According to this, students appearing for 12th exam in 2023, 2024, and 2025 were eligible for three attempts.
• 18 November 2024:
  JAB withdrew its decision two weeks later and again reduced the number of attempts from three to two.
  • This decision has left students in trouble who had left their engineering courses in the hope of a third attempt.
• Petition of 22 students:
  The students filed a petition in the Supreme Court saying that this decision of JAB was arbitrary and it had a negative impact on their preparation.

Supreme Court’s comment

• The court said:
  “If students have left the course after the November 5 notice in the belief that they will get a third attempt, the November 18 decision should not be detrimental to them.”
• The court directed that students who dropped out between November 5 and November 18, 2024, will be allowed to register for JEE Advanced 2025.
