Investment in equity funds increased in December, but returns varied

Mumbai: In the mutual fund industry, investment inflows into equity mutual funds increased by 14.3 percent to Rs 35,927.3 crore in December 2024 compared to November. In which notable investment inflow into sector and thematic funds has been Rs 15,331.5 crore. Which was Rs 7658 crore in November. Of course, as a result of the huge fall-correction that has been seen in the stock markets of the country in the last few months, on one hand the investors in direct equity have suffered a loss in returns, on the other hand, in the last three months, 18% equity of mutual funds has Among the categories, investors could get positive returns in only three categories. So, on one hand, there has been a big decline in returns, NAV, against increased investment by investors.

According to Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) data, investment inflows into large cap funds declined to Rs 2,547.9 crore in December compared to Rs 2,547.9 crore in November. Whereas in mid cap funds it has increased marginally to Rs 5093 crore as compared to Rs 4883.4 crore. Comparable investments in small cap funds increased to Rs 4,668 crore in December compared to Rs 4,112 crore in November. Thus, net investment inflows into equity funds increased to Rs 41136 crore in December compared to Rs 35927.3 crore in December.

Investment inflows into exchange traded funds (ETFs) declined to Rs 784.3 crore compared to Rs 1531.2 crore. Credit risk funds have seen investment withdrawals of Rs 356 crore. Which was Rs 196 crore in November. Corporate bond funds also saw withdrawals of Rs 820 crore compared to Rs 196 crore in December.

Investment inflows into dividend funds have been positive at Rs 277.2 crore as against Rs 216 crore. Indeed, December 2024 has seen huge withdrawals-redemptions of Rs 1.27 lakh crore in debt funds. Which was a positive investment of Rs 12,915 crore in November. Of the 16 debt sub-categories, only the medium to long term category, gilt funds and long term funds recorded investment inflows of Rs 151 crore, Rs 343 crore and Rs 680 crore respectively.

The total assets under management (AUM) of the mutual fund industry increased to Rs 68.08 lakh crore in December 2024 from Rs 66.93 lakh crore in November 2024.

Amfi Chief Executive Venkat Chelasani said, “Despite volatile market conditions, there has been consistent investment inflows into equity-oriented schemes. Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) shares hit an all-time high of Rs 26,459.49 crore in December. With this, a record 22.50 crore mutual fund folios were registered in December.
