Laurene Powell Jobs, wife of Apple co-founder late Steve Jobs, will participate in the Mahakumbh Mela to be held in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh from January 13. This holy fair happens every 12 years, and this time Powell has decided to become a Sadhvi and perform penance for two weeks in the Mahakumbh. During this time, she will observe Kalpavas, which is an ancient Hindu tradition and has special significance in great festivals like Maha Kumbh. It is also mentioned in Vedas and Puranas.

According to a report in Times of India, Powell will stay at the camp of Mahamandaleshwar Swami Kailashananda at the Niranjani Akhara, where she will participate in various rituals and take a holy dip in the Sangam. His stay will continue till January 29.

What is Kalpavas?

Kalpvas is a spiritual practice in which it is believed that one’s desires are fulfilled and one is freed from the bondage of many births. Sadhana at Sangam throughout the month of Magh is called Kalpavas. According to Mahabharata, the result of Kalpavas in the month of Magh is equal to the result of fasting for 9 years. According to the scriptures, the minimum duration of Kalpavas can be one night, while some people do it for three nights, three months, six months, 12 years, or even for a lifetime.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years, is an important religious festival of Hinduism, in which lakhs of devotees, saints and seekers participate. It is believed that bathing in the Sangam water destroys sins and provides spiritual blessings. Lakhs of devotees are expected to attend Mahakumbh this year. According to mythological belief, during the churning of the ocean between the Devas and Asuras, some drops of nectar fell on the earth, due to which these places became sacred and Maha Kumbh is organized every 12 years.
