Mumbai – The Bombay High Court has taken serious note of the behavior of a Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) who sent a Facebook friend request to a female complainant in the middle of the night and directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police to take appropriate action.
Mrs. Revati Mohite Dhare and Ms. The bench headed by Neela Gokhale expressed displeasure over the action of PSI. How can you send a friend request to a woman who is also the prosecutor in the case you are investigating? The court asked this question.
PSI said the friend request was sent in error, but the court ruled that such behavior was unacceptable. The court said that it is not the job of a police officer to send such a request to the complainant.
The government counsel told the court that he had been recruited in PSINV and this was his first posting, although the court expressed concern about his future conduct. Are police officers allowed to use social media? When the court asked this question, the government lawyer replied in the negative.
The court has asked the Deputy Commissioner of Police to appear virtually in the next hearing and explain what action can be taken against the PSI. The petition filed by the woman demanding investigation into the complaint lodged at Samtanagar police station was being heard in the court.
The petitioner woman, resident of Ghatkopar, lives with herself and her schizophrenic husband. His daughter lives on rent in Kandivali. However, the daughter came to live with them for a temporary period due to medical reasons. In August 2024, at the daughter’s rented residence in Kandivali, at the behest of her estranged husband, he collected money and jewelery from her. 15 lakh votes were snatched. Despite repeated complaints, the police did not register the statement or FIR, so the petitioner had to approach the High Court.
On Monday, petitioner’s lawyers Vijay Kantharia and Shubhada Salvi told the court that the PSI used to call the complainant late at night on the pretext of recording his statement. After hearing this, the court has fixed further hearing on January 14.
