Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh merges into Panchatatva: End of an era

Father of India’s economic reforms and former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh merged into Panchatatva with state honors on Saturday. Many prominent personalities from India and abroad participated in his last journey and paid tribute to him. Dr. Singh’s daughter lit his funeral pyre.

Last farewell with state honors

President Draupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk, Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and many other stalwarts attended the funeral of Dr. Manmohan Singh. All of them bid him a final farewell and remembered his contributions.

Last journey: Congress workers raised slogans

During the last march from the Congress headquarters to Nigambodh Ghat, party workers raised slogans “As long as the sun and moon remain, Manmohan will remain your name” and “Manmohan Singh remains immortal”. Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi, family members, and senior Congress leaders were present in the vehicle in which his mortal remains were kept.

Dr Singh’s mortal remains were earlier kept at the Congress headquarters ’24 Akbar Road’, where Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and other leaders paid tribute to him.

Died at the age of 92

Dr. Manmohan Singh died at the age of 92 at AIIMS, Delhi at around 9 pm on 26 December. His demise caused a wave of mourning in the political circles. There was a heated debate between Congress and BJP regarding building a memorial in his honour. However, the government has announced that a mausoleum will be constructed by forming a trust to preserve Dr Singh’s memory.

The extraordinary career of Dr. Manmohan Singh

Dr. Singh’s political and administrative life is a symbol of his scholarship and devotion to duty. He was the Prime Minister of the country twice from 2004 to 2014. Earlier, in 1991, P.V. As Finance Minister in the Narasimha Rao government, he initiated economic reforms. These reforms took the Indian economy to new heights on the global stage.

Education and early career

Dr. Singh did his MA in Economics from Panjab University in 1954 and then obtained a first class honors degree from Cambridge University. In 1962 he earned a DPhil degree from the University of Oxford. His academic career started as a professor at Delhi University.

  1. 1971: Appointed Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India.
  2. 1972: Chief Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Finance.
  3. 1980-82: Member of the Planning Commission.
  4. 1982–85: Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
  5. 1985: Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission.
  6. 1990: Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister.

Dr. Singh’s greatest contribution was seen as Finance Minister in 1991, when he implemented the policy of Liberalization, Privatization and Globalization (LPG) in India. This policy gave a new direction to the Indian economy by recovering it from a serious crisis and established the country on the global economic stage.

Confluence of wisdom and simplicity

Dr. Manmohan Singh will be remembered for his scholarship as well as his humility and simplicity. He played an important role in the development of India as a teacher, economist, and administrator.
