America’s newly elected President Trump has created some controversies even before taking office on January 20. They want to recapture the Panama Canal, which was previously owned by the United States. Also wants to recapture Greenland. They have already talked about buying Greenland in 2019.
Although Greenland is located in North America and is ruled by Europe, American interests are involved in its security. Seeing the threat from China, Trump has talked about buying Greenland. According to him, American occupation of Greenland is very important for national security. Greenland is currently ruled by the European country Denmark. Its capital is Newark. Currently, the local government there handles issues of education, health, natural resources, and law enforcement. Whereas Denmark has handled defence, financial matters. Queen Margrethe of Denmark is the ceremonial head of Greenland while the elected head of government is PM Mute Burrup. The Kwanfold mine itself contains 10 million tonnes of rare earths. Trump wants to capture these mineral deposits.
Strategic importance of Greenland for America
Greenland is not a country connected to Europe, it is a continent of North America and is 5,000 km away from the United States. It has diplomatic importance for America. It is a country spread over 21 lakh square km. There are ample housing possibilities here. It has 13 percent of the world’s crude oil reserves and 30 percent of gas reserves. Which has not been plowed till now. It is located in the Arctic Ocean. Trump has his eyes on his crude oil reserves. There are also reserves of coal, iron, copper and zinc here.
