Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has reacted strongly to the opposition’s notice demanding his removal from the post of Rajya Sabha Chairman. While talking to women journalists at his official residence on Tuesday, he made serious comments regarding this notice. Dhankhar said that it is the responsibility of people holding constitutional posts to show their commitment towards the Constitution and not to try to settle scores due to personal rivalries.

Dhankhar’s statement: ‘Will not be able to sleep for several days after reading the notice’

Vice President Dhankhar described the opposition’s notice as shocking. He said:

“Whoever reads this notice will not be able to sleep for many days. 6 links have been included in it, which are very surprising.”

Giving an example he said that Chandrashekhar ji had said, “If bypass surgery is to be done, a kitchen knife should not be used.” But in my case, “The person who wrote the notice has used a rusty knife. I was stunned after reading it.”

Also commented on Rahul Gandhi’s statement

Dhankhar referred to the statement of BJP MP Piyush Goyal, in which objection was raised regarding the speech given by Rahul Gandhi during his visit to America. Goyal had demanded an apology from Rahul Gandhi, to which Congress strongly opposed. Dhankhar said that on this issue I decided that the law does not stop anyone from raising such issues. he adds:

“If anything is wrong, I would be happy to get guidance. But, the opposition is not able to accept it.”

Deputy Chairman Harivansh rejected the notice of opposition

Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh rejected the opposition’s notice in which Vice President Dhankhar was accused of conducting the proceedings of the Upper House in a partisan manner. Harivansh rejected the notice, calling it factless and prepared in haste. He said that this notice was brought only for the purpose of gaining publicity and the intention to harm Dhankhar’s reputation is clearly visible.

Opposition’s allegation: Dhankhar ran the House in a partisan manner

The constituents of the opposition Alliance India had submitted a notice to the Rajya Sabha General Secretary on December 10 to remove Vice President Dhankhar from his post.
Key points of notice:

  • Dhankhar conducted proceedings in the Rajya Sabha in a partisan manner.
  • This step is contrary to the basic principles of the Constitution.

The notice was signed by 60 opposition leaders including Congress, Trinamool Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, DMK, and Samajwadi Party. However, leaders like Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Tiruchi Siva, and Derek O’Brien did not sign the notice.

Dhankhar raised questions on the intentions of the opposition

The Vice President termed this step of the opposition as politically motivated and against the dignity of the Constitution. He said that people holding constitutional posts should be constructive and impartial. Dhankhar also said that this notice of the opposition was prepared only to tarnish his image.
