Difficult situations and negative news remain in the headlines every day in neighboring country Pakistan. Inflation, political instability and social conflicts have troubled the people there. But amidst all this, a positive and inspiring news has come from Karachi. A school started by Sabina Khatri in Karachi’s Lyari area is providing education and life skills opportunities not only to children but also to their mothers.
Unique school for mother and child
The most special thing about this school is that along with the children, their mothers are also enrolled here. This school is for those families who are going through deprivation and struggles. Sabina Khatri established this unique school taking inspiration from the struggles of her life. He says,
“The children studying in my school have seen violence and hardships closely in their homes and outside. I realized that the situation of the mothers in these homes is no different from that of the children. So, I made a rule that the mother would also enroll in the school along with the child.”
This school not only provides education to the children but also provides counselling, life skills training, and parenting training for their mothers.
Changes in the lives of mothers
The story of Tehmina, who enrolled with her son in school, is a great example of this. After marriage at the age of sixteen and separation the following year, Tehmina was left raising her child alone. His mental health has improved after coming to school. She has started adopting a positive outlook towards her and her child’s future.
