US Shutdown: America, the world’s most powerful country, is under threat of American shutdown. If this happens, government offices, national monuments, parks will all be closed in America. Employees will not get salaries, schemes will be blocked. Due to which everyone from common to special may have to face problems. This comes after President-elect Donald Trump’s opposition to a potential funding bill. Let us see what shutdown means in America and what effect it has on the lives of common people.

What is a shutdown?

In simple terms, a shutdown occurs when the federal government in the United States runs out of money. Many government services come to a standstill due to lack of funds. The salaries of the employees have also been stopped.

The history of shutdowns in America is very old. There have been a total of 21 shutdowns since 1976. There was also a shutdown on December 22, 2018, during Donald Trump’s previous tenure. Meanwhile, the shutdown lasted for a total of 35 days. Also, about 8 lakh government employees worked without salary.

Government work comes to a halt during shutdown

When there is a shutdown in America, all types of government work comes to a halt. The reason behind this is that the government takes the required amount of money in the form of loan to continue its important schemes for these works.

The approval of the US Parliament i.e. Congress is necessary for this loan. But the problem here is that it requires mutual consent between the party and the opposition parties i.e. Democratic and Republican parties before it reaches Congress for approval. Usually, an agreement is reached between the two by the time the funding ends, but this time it did not happen.

Fewer votes were cast in favor of the bill

In the US Parliament, 174 votes were cast in favor of this bill and 235 against it. Trump’s party has always opposed including in law a provision to raise or suspend the nation’s debt limit to prevent a government shutdown, and is now seeking to enact it. In such a situation, his party leaders also voted against the bill.

…So the shutdown can last for so many days!

Experts say the US government shutdown could last for two weeks. Even before this, there was a government shutdown for 35 days during the tenure of the Trump government. At that time about 8 lakh government employees were working without salary.
