In the 90s, Govinda’s fan following was as big as that of Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan. Govinda gave more hit films in one year than any actor can give in his lifetime. At one time he had signed 75 films. Worked continuously on the set for two weeks. Due to which he fell ill.
Today, Shahrukh and Salman’s names would have been in place of Govinda, but by the 21st decade, Govinda’s films started flopping continuously. A lot of controversy started against him. There came a time when films stopped being available. The films that were ready could not reach the theatres. After all, what is the real reason for Govinda’s downfall?
Born on 21 December 1963, Govinda turns 61 today. Today on his birthday, let us know some special things about him…
Acting was inherited, but had to be worked on
Govinda’s father Arun Kumar Ahuja was a famous artist of his time. He worked in 30-40 films. Whereas, Govinda’s mother Nirmala Devi was a classical singer, who used to sing songs for films. Despite having a film background, Govinda made his mark in the industry after a lot of struggles. He started acting with the film ‘Love 86’. This film was a superhit and made Govinda a star overnight.
Dilip Kumar was advised to leave 25 films
After the debut film, Govinda started getting offers for many films. At the age of 21, he signed 75 films. Once he did not sleep for 16 days because he was working on the set for two weeks continuously. Due to which he fell ill on the set and had to go to the hospital often due to continuous work. In a podcast interview with Manish Paul, Govinda said- Dilip Kumar sir had advised me to leave 25 films. He advised that it is important to stay healthy.
14 films released in one year
Govinda has done more than 165 films in his career. Govinda’s star was very high in the 80’s and 90’s. At that time, every film of his proved to be a blockbuster at the box office. There was a period in his career when 14 films were released continuously in a year. It is said that during that time Govinda was competing with all three Khans.
Left the film for Salman Khan
When Govinda’s career was at its peak, he left the film ‘Judwaa’ for Salman Khan. This was revealed by Govinda himself during an interview. Govinda said- At that time my career was at its peak. During the days when the shooting of ‘Judwaa’ was going on, once around 2-3 in the night I got a call from Salman.
He said Chi Chi Bhaiya, how many more hits will you give? I asked him why what happened? He said, ‘Please leave the film ‘Judwaa’ you are shooting and give it to me. Along with the film, you will also have to provide its director and producer. Govinda offered the film to Salman Khan, but his career reached a stage when his films started flopping continuously. Govinda started feeling that a conspiracy was being hatched against him.
Sunil approached Shetty asking for work
When Govinda was making a comeback into films after becoming disillusioned with politics, he approached Sunil Shetty for work. Actually Sunil Shetty was producing the film ‘Bhagambhaag’. In this film he himself had to play the character of ‘Babaala’. When Govinda came to know that the film was being produced by Sunil Shetty, he contacted Sunil Shetty and asked him to work in the film. Because they are in dire need of work. Sunil Shetty had given his role to Govinda in Yaari Dosti. Akshay Kumar and Govinda were seen together for the first time in this film.
Salman had repaid his loan by working in ‘Partner’
Salman Khan’s film ‘Partner’ was produced by his brother Sohail Khan along with Parag Sanghvi. When Govinda’s career was at its peak, he left the film ‘Judwaa’ for Salman Khan. When Govinda became unconscious, Salman asked his brother Sohail to choose Govinda as his ‘partner’.
However, at that time the relations between Govinda and the film’s director David Dhawan were not good. After ‘Partner’, the relationship between Salman and Govinda deteriorated. Actually Govinda wanted Salman to launch his daughter Tina Ahuja in the film ‘Dabangg’, but instead of launching Tina in the film, Salman launched Sonakshi Sinha. From here the relationship between Govinda and Salman Khan started deteriorating.
One advice ruined David and Govinda’s relationship
Govinda did 17 films with David Dhawan. Most of these films have been hits. Then what happened that David Dhawan distanced himself from Govinda? Actually, during the shooting of the film ‘Ek Aur Ek Gyarah’, Govinda did not like a scene. Govinda talked to David Dhawan about this and expressed his opinion that if a little change was made in the scene, the scene could have been more effective.
