US Immigration News: According to a report released on Thursday by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement-ICE department, 270,000 people were deported to 192 countries, including India, in the last one year. A total of 271,484 people were deported by ICE during the fiscal year ending September 30. This figure is almost double the figure of 142580 last year. This is the highest number of people deported since 2014. 315,943 people were deported in 2014. During Trump’s previous administration, 267,258 people were deported in 2019.

Meanwhile, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Thursday that authorities arrested 46,612 people who entered Mexico illegally in November. Which is 18 percent less than the 56,526 arrests made a month ago. A maximum of 2.5 lakh people were arrested in December 2023.

The number of deported people increased as the number of deportation flights increased and travel procedures eased in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. For the first time in six years, ICE sent a deportation flight to China. In addition, planes also repatriated people to Albania, Angola, Egypt, Georgia, Ghana, Guinea, India, Mauritania, Romania, Senegal, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Last year, a total of 87,298 people were deported to Mexico, 66,435 to Guatemala and 45,923 to Honduras. Deportations to Mexico and other Central American countries will increase in the coming years as these countries readily accept back their citizens and find it relatively easy to deport them.

The ICE agency’s workforce of about 6,000 officers and the facilities to detain illegal immigrants have remained the same for a decade, while the number monitored by immigration courts has grown steadily. Last year the number of cases was 61 lakh, this year the number of cases has increased to 76 lakh. Over the past twelve months, ICE detained an average of 37,700 people per day. This figure was arrived at on the basis of funds provided by the Congress. Where to keep these people is also a question. Land is offered in rural areas of the state of Texas to house them.

In the last one year, 113431 people were arrested by ICE. Which is 34 percent less than the 170,590 arrests made last year. ICE could not focus on making arrests inside the country because it needed more enforcement at the border with Mexico.
