Italy’s data protection watchdog has fined OpenAI $1.56 million after completing an investigation into the personal collection of US artificial intelligence company ChatGPT’s popular chatbox.

According to Italy’s privacy watchdog Garante, OpenAI used customers’ personal data to train ChatGPT.

Customer data was used without a legal basis. Apart from this, the rules of transparency were also violated.

Responding to the decision, OpenAI said it will appeal the fine because the amount of the fine is unreasonable.

“When Italy ordered ChatGPT to be shut down in 2023, we began working with them to restore it a month later,” an OpenAI spokesperson said in a statement.

He further said that Italy has been fined 20 times more than what we earned in the relevant period.

OpenAI further said that we are working with the privacy authorities of various countries and complying with the regulations set by them to ensure that people continue to benefit from artificial intelligence.

Italy launched an investigation against ChatGPT last year. Italian authorities ordered OpenAI to run a six-month campaign in various Italian media regarding ChatGPT’s data collection policy.
