Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke on his 25 years in office and the current situation in Russia. Speaking to the media on Thursday, Putin claimed that he has played an important role in taking Russia out of deep crisis and saving it from destruction.

Saved Russia from a deep pit

Putin said:

“During my tenure, I saved Russia from falling into a deep hole.”
He cited the example of Boris Yeltsin (1991–1999), saying that as long as Yeltsin prioritized the interests of Western countries, he received appreciation from world leaders.

  • “But as soon as Yeltsin gave prominence to Russia’s interests, the attitude of Western leaders changed,” Putin said.

emphasis on sovereignty

Putin also expressed his views on the Russia-Ukraine war and the economic crisis. He said:

“I feel that I not only saved Russia but also preserved its sovereignty.”
He also said that if the policies of his predecessor’s leadership had continued, Russia would not exist as a sovereign nation today.

Rejected pressure from western leaders

Putin said that during his tenure he never accepted external pressure.

  • During Yeltsin’s time, when he worked according to Western standards, he was appreciated.
  • But as soon as he spoke of the defense of Yugoslavia and opposed the attacks on Belgrade, the mood turned against him.
  • Putin said:

“I insisted on making Russia an independent and strong nation instead of external pressure.”
