Mumbai: With the onset of winter, the picturesque surroundings of Vasai-Virar witness the arrival of different types of birds. Recently, bird lovers have witnessed the sighting of ‘Common Kurawa’ bird in Mamachi Wadi area of ​​Virar. Ornithologists have claimed that this type of bird has been seen for the first time in the state.

The settlement area is picturesque and a large number of birds come to seek shelter in the wetlands of the area. Especially with the onset of winter, various species of birds migrate to this area.

Bird lovers visit wetlands to study and observe various bird species. Recently a group of Vasai bird observers went for bird observation in Mamachi Wadi area near Virar Arnala, during bird observation on this coast they saw a small Kuru bird in a flock of Black-backed Kuru birds.

At first he was curious about that bird because it looked different from the crowd of birds. These observers took photographs and sent them to bird experts to learn more about them. At this time, experts examined the bird and reported that it is a ‘Common Gull’, with ornithologist Ramesh Shenai stating that this is the first time that it has been recorded in the state of Maharashtra. It is noteworthy that there is a large wetland area in the Vasai-Virar coastal belt area.

This species is commonly found in Europe, hence its name ‘Common Gull’. It breeds in the Russian tundra abroad and migrates to its southern lands in winter. Very few come to India. Earlier there are records of sightings in states like Gujarat, Goa, Kerala, Delhi, Uttarakhand. Experts say that this bird has been seen for the first time in the state of Maharashtra.

There are wetlands that are rich in biodiversity and important bird habitats. But, in the current situation, wetlands are facing encroachment and other problems. Ornithologists have expressed the opinion that conservation of such wetlands has become necessary so that birds of different species can visit those places only if the wetland and its biodiversity is protected.
