A tragic accident took place in the Gudauri mountain resort of Georgia in which 12 Indian citizens lost their lives. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, the accident was caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. Following the incident, the Indian High Commissioner has expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and is in constant touch with the local authorities.
Full details of the incident
Twelve Indian citizens were found dead in a restaurant located in the Gudauri mountain resort of Georgia. Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs said in its statement that no injuries or signs of violence were found during a preliminary inspection.
According to local media reports, the police investigation concluded that all the victims died from carbon monoxide poisoning. This toxic gas is odorless and colourless, due to which it is difficult to detect.
Indian High Commissioner’s response
The Indian High Commissioner in Tbilisi confirmed that all 12 deceased were Indian citizens. Expressing his deep condolences to the bereaved families, he said that all possible assistance will be provided to the Indian citizens who lost their lives in this incident. The High Commissioner also said that he is in touch with the local authorities and is collecting all the necessary information.
Georgia’s official claim
Although the Indian High Commissioner described all the dead as Indian citizens, the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs said that among the dead were 11 foreign nationals and one Georgian national. According to the ministry statement, all the deceased worked in the same Indian restaurant and their bodies were found in a bedroom located on the second floor of the restaurant.
Case of murder by negligence registered
Georgia Police has registered a case of murder by negligence under Section 116 of the Criminal Code and started investigation. Police believe that carbon monoxide gas leaked from an electric generator kept in a closed space near the bedroom.
It is being told that due to power supply being cut off, the generator was started on Friday night, due to which this poisonous gas spread.
Forensic investigation and police action
Forensic medical examination is being conducted to find out the exact cause of death. Forensic experts and criminal investigation team are reaching the spot, collecting evidence and recording statements of persons related to the case.
The investigation process has been kept ‘active’ so that the truth behind the incident can be revealed as soon as possible.
Dangers of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Carbon monoxide (CO) is an extremely dangerous gas, which is colorless and odorless. Its leakage is not easy to detect, and this gas disrupts the supply of oxygen to the body. Prolonged exposure can result in death.
In this incident, due to lack of proper ventilation while using the generator, the gas level reached dangerous levels, leading to this tragic incident.
Measures to prevent such incidents in future
- Ensuring ventilation: It is important to have proper ventilation when using the generator in closed areas.
- Carbon Monoxide Detector: Carbon monoxide detectors should be installed so that danger can be detected in time.
- Following safety guidelines: It is important to follow safety instructions while using generators and other equipment.
- Training and Awareness: Employees should be trained to take correct steps in case of gas leakage.
