Ustad Zakir Hussain, who had his own identity of Tabla in the world of music, is no more. He died at the age of 73. He breathed his last during treatment in a hospital in San Francisco, America. The family of the famous tabla player gave this information on Monday.
The family said in a statement that Zakir Hussain died due to complications of ‘idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis’ related to the lungs. He was 73 years old. Hussain was hospitalized for the last two weeks. After Hussain’s condition deteriorated, he was admitted to the ICU. Zakir Hussain is survived by his wife Antonia Minnecola and their daughters Anisha Qureshi and Isabella Qureshi.
Zakir Hussain was born on 9 March 1951, the son of renowned tabla player Ustad Allah Rakha. He is counted among the greatest tabla players of his generation. Zakir Hussain learned tabla from his father. Ustad Zakir Hussain’s personality can be gauged from the fact that he gave his first concert in America when he was just 11 years old. He won three Grammy Awards. He was also awarded Padma Vibhushan. He has played an important role in making Tabla famous at the international level.
