France Chido Cyclone: Cyclone ‘Chido’ has caused massive devastation in the Mayotte region of France. It is feared that the number of people who lost their lives here has reached close to 1,000. A top government official gave this information on Sunday.
François-Xavier Beauville, the prefect of Mayotte, said, “I think hundreds of people have died from this storm, perhaps the number could reach around a thousand. It is too early to give exact figures after the widespread destruction caused by the tropical cyclone. Ocean Island is ‘extremely difficult’ on Saturday.
Mayotte is the poorest region of the European Union
Earlier on Sunday, officials confirmed at least 11 deaths in Mayotte but later said the number was likely to rise. Located in the south-eastern Indian Ocean off the coast of Africa, Mayotte is the poorest island territory of France and the poorest region of the European Union.
Wind blew at a speed of more than 220 kilometers per hour
According to the French meteorological department, Chido caused wind gusts of more than 220 kilometers per hour, damaging several houses in Mayotte. Mayotte has a population of more than 3 million people spread across two main islands about 800 kilometers off the east coast of Africa. At some places entire areas were destroyed. Local residents reported that many trees were uprooted and boats capsized or sank.
