New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved the One Country One Election Bill. This bill will now be presented in Parliament on Monday 16th. The aim of this bill, known as One Nation One Election, is to conduct simultaneous assembly and Lok Sabha elections of all the states. It has been claimed in the bill that at present a lot of expenditure is being incurred in conducting elections. In such a situation, this cost can be avoided by holding elections simultaneously.
The Central Government constituted a commission under the leadership of former President Ramnath Kovind to prepare the draft of the bill, this Ramnath Kovind Commission submitted the draft report to the Centre, which will now be presented in the Parliament in the form of a bill after the approval of the Union Cabinet. On the other hand, the ruling NDA party is in support of this bill while the opposition Congress, Aam Aadmi Party and Trinamool Congress are against this bill. The opposition claims that one nation, one election can lead to centralization of power. This may weaken the principles of federalism (power of the Center and the states). With this bill of the Central Government, a new Article 82A will be added to the Constitution while three Articles 83, 172 and 327 will have to be amended.
The bill claims that assembly and Lok Sabha elections were held simultaneously in the years 1951-52, 1957, 1962 and 1967. However, from 1968 to 1969, this cycle of simultaneous elections was broken when some assemblies were dissolved prematurely. Ram Nath Kovind Commission Mun.
