Bikaner, 13 December (Hindustan Reporter). A processing unit of two metric tonne capacity for honey and bee hive products will be set up in Swami Keshavanand Rajasthan Agricultural University (SKRAU). Besides, a mini honey testing laboratory will also be established to check the quality of honey. Apart from this, bee plantation will also be developed.
Vice Chancellor Dr. Arun Kumar told that all this will be done under the project of Rs 83.75 lakh approved by the National Bee Board of the Government of India on December 12 to the Department of Entomology of Agricultural College, Bikaner under the National Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM).
Vice Chancellor Dr. Arun Kumar said that this is the first project regarding beekeeping in North-Western Rajasthan that has been approved. This project will provide new opportunities for farmers and entrepreneurs in the field of beekeeping. Also, by improving the production capacity and quality of honey and bee products, the sector will contribute to the Self-reliant India campaign.
Dean of Agriculture College, Bikaner, Dr. P.K. Yadav said that due to the special efforts of SKRAU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Arun Kumar, the Agricultural University has got two projects of bamboo production and beekeeping approved from the Government of India this year after a long gap since 2011. Under the approved project for bamboo production, work has been started on the possibilities of bamboo cultivation in the dry areas of Rajasthan. Work on this beekeeping project will also be started soon.
Head of Department of Entomology, Dr. L.L. Deshwal said that the objective of this project is to promote beekeeping, develop entrepreneurship and improve the quality of products related to it. Under this project, a processing unit for honey and products obtained from bee hive will be established so that its quality can be improved. There will be improvement and competition in the market will increase. Along with this, a mini-honey testing laboratory will also be established whose purpose is to test the quality of honey and make it in accordance with national and international standards. Apart from this, bee plantation will also be developed under this project. Under which plants suitable for bees will be cultivated and conserved, which will promote their natural habitat.
