SEOUL: South Korea’s former defense minister was arrested last week after martial law was imposed and withdrawn. He tried to commit suicide in the detention centre, but was saved. He is considered a confidant of President Yoon. President Yoon’s office strongly opposed the police investigation.

South Korea’s main opposition Democratic Party is planning a new impeachment motion against Yoon. The President imposed martial law in South Korea for the first time in four decades.

The first impeachment motion was defeated in the absence of the ruling party. Now the opposition is planning a new impeachment motion, which will be presented on Thursday and voted on tomorrow.

Korea Correctional Service Commissioner General Shin Yong Hye said former Defense Minister Kim Yong-Hyun attempted suicide at a detention center in Seoul, but was stopped by correctional officers and is now in stable condition.

Kim was arrested on Wednesday. A court in Seoul approved an arrest warrant against him on charges of playing a key role in the coup and abusing power. Kim was the first Prime Minister to be arrested after the lifting of martial law. He is considered one of Yun’s close associates. He is accused of recommending martial law to Yun and sending military forces into the National Assembly to prevent lawmakers from voting.

However, MPs managed to enter Parliament and voted against martial law. Due to this the cabinet had to lift martial law.
