The controversy over next year’s Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan is not stopping. ICC has not yet released the schedule of this tournament. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has refused to send its team to Pakistan citing security concerns. Due to this, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is angry and the tussle continues between the two boards.

The ICC has suggested the PCB to adopt a hybrid model for organizing the tournament, but the PCB is not agreeing to it and has put forward several conditions. Till now, even after several meetings, no solution has been found.

Rashid Latif’s controversial statement

The statements of former Pakistani cricketers in the Champions Trophy controversy are continuously making headlines. Now former Pakistani captain Rashid Latif has given a controversial statement on this issue. Latif suggested that the PCB should boycott the Champions Trophy before any action by the BCCI.

Latif believes that such a step will send a message of fair play and equality to the cricket world. He said:

“Pakistan should boycott the Champions Trophy. We should take this step before BCCI’s decision. We are always made scapegoats, be it the Afghan war or cricket.”

Increasing tension between BCCI and PCB

BCCI has completely rejected PCB’s hybrid model for the Champions Trophy to be held in February-March 2025. This has further increased the deadlock regarding organizing the tournament.

  • Hybrid Model:
    • PCB had agreed to organize the tournament under the hybrid model.
    • In this model, India’s matches were to be played at neutral venues.
    • The PCB laid down a condition that in future it too could refuse to play in tournaments organized in India.

Rejecting this proposal, BCCI clarified that there is no security threat in India, hence the hybrid model cannot be accepted.

Rashid Latif cited war

Rashid Latif in his statement linked the India-Pakistan dispute in the context of war. He said that injustice is always done to Pakistan and it is made a “scapegoat” even on the cricket stage. He said that if India boycotted the Champions Trophy, Pakistan’s position would become weak.

Major tournaments in India

BCCI’s stand is clear that many big cricket tournaments will be organized in India in the coming years.

  • 2025: Women’s ODI World Cup
  • 2026: Co-hosting the T20 World Cup with Sri Lanka
  • 2029: Champions Trophy
  • 2031: ODI World Cup

BCCI has also made it clear to ICC that there is no security threat in India, hence there is no question of holding the match at a neutral venue.
