Waqf Board’s illegal occupation of 994 properties in the country, total of 9.5 lakh properties: Central Government

Waqf Board: A total of 994 properties have been illegally occupied by Waqfs across the country, with Tamil Nadu alone having the highest number of 734 properties, the Central government told Parliament on Monday. In a written reply to questions from Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader John Brittas, the Minority Affairs Ministry, citing available information on Waqf, said that 872,352 immovable and 16,713 movable Waqf properties are registered under the Waqf Act in the country.

Highest illegal occupation in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh

Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju replied, ‘As per the available information, it has been reported that 994 properties have been illegally occupied by Waqf. Out of total 994 such properties across the country, 734 properties are in illegal possession of Waqf in Tamil Nadu. Apart from this, 152 properties have been illegally occupied in Andhra Pradesh, 63 in Punjab, 11 in Uttarakhand and 10 in Jammu and Kashmir.

Waqf has not received land since 2019

The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry told the Rajya Sabha on Monday that no land has been given to the Waqf Board by the central government since 2019. He said this in response to a question regarding the information about the land given to the Waqf Board by the Central and State Governments from 2019 till now.

As far as the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is concerned, no land has been given to the Waqf Board by the Government of India since 2019. Last week, JPC chairperson Jagdambika Pal said the panel has written to state governments seeking details of the disputed Waqf properties under their jurisdiction.
