Five dead, 49 injured in Mumbai’s Kurla BEST bus accident, driver arrested

Mumbai, 10 December (Hindustan Reporter). Five people died in BEST bus accident in Kurla, Mumbai. 49 people injured in the accident are undergoing treatment at Sion and Bhabha hospitals. Of these, the condition of 26 is critical. Officials say the death toll is likely to increase. Bus driver Sanjay More (54) has been arrested. According to Kurla Police, at around 9.30 pm on Monday night, the BEST Enterprise bus (number 332) was going from Kurla towards Andheri with 60 passengers. On LBS route, driver Sanjay More pressed the accelerator instead of the brake.

Due to this, the bus went out of control and entered the market, trampling many vehicles including pedestrians and stopped after hitting a gate. Vijay Vishnu Gaikwad (70), Afreen Abdul Salim Shah (19), Anam Shaikh (20), Kanis Fatima Ghulam Qadri (55), Shivam Kashyap (18) died in this accident. 49 people, including four patrolling policemen, were injured. The injured were immediately admitted to private hospitals including Bhabha Hospital, Sion Hospital. The condition of 26 injured is said to be serious. A case has been registered at Kurla Police Station on the complaint of Police Sub Inspector Praveen Chavan, who was injured in the accident. The team of Kurla police station is investigating the accident through CCTV. Angered by this incident, people also thrashed the driver Sanjay More. According to the police, Sanjay More was hired on contract as a driver in BEST undertaking from December 1. He has no experience of driving a bus. On Monday he was asked to drive the BEST bus for the first time. There was no technical fault in the bus. Local MLA Mangesh Kudalkar and MLA Dilip Lande reached the hospital on Tuesday after meeting the injured. This morning, the accident bus was taken to Kurla Bus Depot with the help of a crane. It has been announced that Kurla Bus Depot will remain closed today.
