Bengaluru, 10 December (HS). Former Chief Minister of Karnataka and former Foreign Minister of the country SM Krishna passed away early today. He breathed his last at his home here at the age of 92. He was ill for a long time. The Central Government had decorated him with Padma Vibhushan last year. He was currently associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Many leaders of BJP and Congress including the Chief Minister of the state have expressed grief over his demise.
SM Krishna held the reins of Karnataka from 1999 to 2004. He was also the Foreign Minister in the Congress government led by Manmohan Singh. In March 2017, he left Congress and joined BJP. Former Chief Minister Krishna started his political innings around 1960. In 1962, he contested the Maddur assembly seat as an independent candidate and defeated the Congress. After this he joined Praja Socialist Party. Joined Congress in 1968 after winning the by-election from Mandya Lok Sabha seat. He was also the Governor of Maharashtra. He retired from active politics in January last year.
