Seoul, 09 December (HS). In South Korea, a travel ban is being considered on President Yun Suk Yeol, who somehow escaped the impeachment motion of the opposition in the plenary session of the National Assembly. Police said today they were reviewing whether to impose a travel ban on Yeol to investigate treason and other charges related to last week’s short-term declaration of martial law.

According to The Korea Times newspaper, Yeol faces serious charges of treason, rebellion and abuse of power brought against several senior government and military officials. Both police and prosecutors have listed Yoon as a “suspect” in the investigation. A police officer told the press conference that deliberations also included “the possibility of the President leaving the country.” When the officer was asked about the possibility of arresting Yoon without a warrant, he said it would depend on the circumstances. The police did not refuse to personally interrogate Yoon.

Woo Jong-soo, head of the National Investigation Office at the National Police Agency, said at a press briefing that a special team of about 150 investigating officers has been formed. Meanwhile, the Defense Ministry said today that control of South Korea’s military forces currently rests with President Yoon Suk Yeol as commander in chief. Defense Ministry spokesman Jeon Ha-kyu said at a regular press briefing when asked whether a suspect in a rebellion case could have such powers. “Legally, the control of the armed forces currently rests with the Commander in Chief,” he said.
