Rio de Janeiro, December 9 (HS). Gregor’s late goal helped Botafogo beat Sao Paulo 2-1 on Sunday and end a 29-year wait for a third Brazilian Serie A title.
Jefferson Savarino scored the first goal for Botafogo in the 37th minute of the match, after which William Gomes scored for Sao Paulo in the 63rd minute to level the score at 1-1.
Gregor took advantage of a wrong defensive pass and scored in the 92nd minute.
The result, held at the Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, meant that Botafogo finished the season with 79 points, six points ahead of second-place Palmeiras.
It was the second major trophy for Botafogo in eight days, having previously beaten Atlético Mineiro 3–1 in the Copa Libertadores final in Buenos Aires.
Botafogo manager Artur Jorge said that it is great to win this title after the disappointment of last season. Last time the team squandered a 13-point lead to lose the Serie A title to Palmeiras.
Jorge, who joined the club from Braga in Portugal in April, told Sportv: “I am very happy, not only because we have achieved our goals this season, but also because the players went through a lot last year. We had an extraordinary season and the fans deserve it more than anything. “He has had to endure a lot to reach this point.”
Botafogo, which won previous top-tier titles in 1968 and 1995, is only the third club to capture the Brazilian Série A and Copa Libertadores titles in the same year. The feat was also achieved by Pelé’s Santos in 1962 and 1963 and Flamengo in 2019.
Botafogo will now turn their attention to the inaugural edition of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup in Qatar, where they will face Mexico’s Pachuca in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
