In winter, the problem of snoring while sleeping is seen increasing in many people. This problem not only affects your health but also causes trouble for those sleeping with you. Let us understand why snoring increases in winter and what measures can be effective to get rid of it.
Why does snoring increase in winter?
1. Nasal congestion:
Nasal congestion due to sinus and allergies is common during cold weather. When it becomes difficult to breathe through the nose, the compulsion to breathe through the mouth increases, due to which snoring starts.
2. Shrinkage of throat muscles:
When one feels cold, the muscles of the throat become stiff, due to which the air passage becomes tight. This can be an important cause of snoring.
In winter, physical activity decreases and food intake increases, which can lead to weight gain. Snoring also increases due to accumulation of fat around the throat.
4. Dry air
In winter the air becomes dry due to heaters and low humidity. This causes the membranes of the throat and nose to dry up, causing snoring.
Ways to reduce snoring
1. Steam
Inhaling steam before sleeping opens the nasal passages and makes breathing easier.
2. Change sleeping position: sleeping on the bed
Sleeping on the back can cause blockage of the airway in the throat. It would be better if you sleep on your side.
3. Use a humidifier:
Use a humidifier to maintain humidity in the room. It protects the membranes of the throat and nose from drying out.
4. Control your weight:
Keep your weight under control with a balanced diet and regular exercise. This helps in reducing snoring.
5. Avoid alcohol and smoking: both
These things affect the respiratory tract and can increase snoring. Therefore, it is better to quit smoking and drinking alcohol forever.
