Sleep: Regular sleep and good sleep is not only limited to giving rest to the body but is also very important for the health of the heart and brain. A recent study showed that if you don’t sleep and wake up at the same time every day, your risk of heart attack and stroke can increase by 26%. This study was conducted on more than 72,000 people aged 40 to 79 years. The findings show that sleep regularity is a major risk factor for heart disease, even more than sleep duration.
What does the research say?

The researchers divided the participants into three groups based on the ‘Sleep Regularity Index’.

Short sleepers (SRI >87.3): Lowest risk of heart disease.

Moderately irregular sleepers (SRI 71.6–87.3): 8% increased risk.

Severely irregular sleepers (SRI)

Research also made it clear that just getting enough sleep is not enough. If you do not keep your sleep schedule regular then the risk of heart diseases will not reduce.

Dangerous consequences of sleep irregularity

Irregular sleep disrupts the body’s 24-hour biological clock (circadian rhythm). This clock regulates not only metabolism but also hormonal activity. Its disturbance can also affect heart attack, stroke, diabetes and mental health.

How to improve?

Experts say that some easy measures can be adopted to maintain sleep regularity.

– Sleeping and waking up at the same time.

– Reduce screen time (mobile, laptop) before sleeping.

– Eat light food at night and avoid caffeine.

– Keep the sleeping environment quiet and dark

– Make a habit of reading or meditating before sleeping.
