Benefits of dark chocolate: If you are fond of eating chocolate then this news may be special for you. According to a recent American study, eating dark chocolate five times a week can reduce the risk of type-2 diabetes. This research has been published in the BMJ journal, which also found that excessive consumption of milk chocolate is associated with an increased risk of weight gain in the long run.
Dark chocolate is rich in flavanols (natural compounds), which help promote heart health and reduce the risk of diabetes. However, research so far on the link between chocolate and type-2 diabetes has yielded inconclusive results.
They analyzed data from three large US studies with more than 1.92 lakh participants in the study. All participants were healthy and had no history of diabetes, heart disease or cancer. During an average monitoring period of 25 years, 18,862 people developed type 2 diabetes. The analysis showed that people who ate chocolate at least five times a week had a 10% reduced risk of diabetes.
When the analysis focused on dark and milk chocolate, it was found that dark chocolate eaters had a 21% reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, while milk chocolate eaters had no such effect. The study also found that each additional week of dark chocolate consumed reduced the risk of diabetes by 3%. The researchers suggested that further clinical trials are needed to confirm these findings and understand the reasons behind the beneficial effects of dark chocolate.
