What is the difference between day and night test?
In 2012, the International Cricket Council (ICC) changed the playing status of Test cricket to allow Test matches to be played under day and night conditions. The first day-night Test was played in Adelaide (Australia vs New Zealand) in 2015. The decision to introduce day-night Test cricket was taken to increase the popularity of the longer format of the game and to play it at a time that would attract more viewers on television.
The biggest difference between a regular Test and a Day & Night Test match is that it is played with a pink ball instead of the traditional red one. Meanwhile, the first period break is followed by a tea break (20 minutes break). But lunch break is replaced by dinner break (40 minutes break) and it happens at the end of the second week.
What is pink ball? How is it different?
Since the red ball is not visible in field lights, a pink ball was used in day-night Tests.
The red ball has a white seam, in contrast the pink ball has a black seam. Although the initial batch had white seams, a change was made in 2016 to increase visibility and ensure contrast with the pink color of the ball. A big plus on the back of the ball is that it has an additional coating of lacquer (shiny coating).
This has a big impact on the way the game is played as the pink ball swings more, especially in light. Pink ball also has a long lifespan and its shine remains intact for a long time. India vs Australia is the 21st pink ball test in Adelaide. So far, the results of all 20 day-night test matches have come and no match has been drawn.
